To Have and Have Not: A Tale of Two Libraries

New Central Libraries for San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA
  • Patrick Quigley, LC, IALD | Patrick B. Quigley & Associates
Previous Next

Two cities, each longing for a central library that can win the hearts of its citizens and serve as a civic centerpiece. One metropolis has a gold plated budget, while the other is nearly broke. The DLF presents Patrick Quigley to compare and contrast Norfolk's Slover Memorial Library, a blend of historic and contemporary architecture, with San Diego's Central Library, a quirky, deconstructivist version of regional architecture. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how architecture and circumstance drove unique lighting solutions to fulfill each City's dreams.
